Holiday Announced in Punjab District Due to Heavy Rainfall by Govt of Punjab
The Deputy Commissioner of Rawalpindi has announced a one-day holiday across the district due to continuous heavy rainfall and dangerous weather conditions. This step was taken to ensure public safety as the city faces a serious rain emergency.
The announcement came through a public statement shared on the platform X (formerly Twitter), where the Deputy Commissioner urged all residents to stay inside their homes. He clearly advised the public to avoid unnecessary travel or outdoor movement, warning that the ongoing situation could become worse in the next few hours. According to official reports, Rawalpindi has so far received 199 millimeters of rain, and the downpour is still continuing without any break. The rain started late last night and has not slowed down. Weather experts expect more intense rainfall in the next two to three hours, which could lead to further problems in low-lying areas and urban drainage systems.
The Deputy Commissioner also declared a rain emergency in Rawalpindi district, alerting all departments to remain active and ready. Teams from WASA (Water and Sanitation Agency), RWMC (Rawalpindi Waste Management Company), and the district administration have been deployed to manage the situation and respond quickly to any emergencies.
He appealed to the public to cooperate fully with these teams, especially in clearing blocked roads, helping rescue efforts, and not interfering with the work of emergency workers. Citizens have been asked to report any waterlogging, electricity faults, or dangerous situations immediately to the helplines of the relevant departments.
Rawalpindi is not the only area facing the brunt of this extreme weather. Many parts of Punjab have also been hit by heavy monsoon rains, causing water to accumulate in streets and affecting daily life. In Lahore, Gujranwala, and other nearby cities, rainwater has flooded roads, blocked traffic, and damaged property. Rescue teams are already working in these areas, and the provincial government is monitoring the situation closely.
In Rawalpindi, schools and public offices will remain closed today (Thursday) to prevent any risk to students and government employees. The city administration has also warned private companies and businesses to consider work-from-home options where possible.
People are advised to stay updated through official channels and not believe in fake news or social media rumors. The district authorities will issue further instructions if needed, depending on the weather forecast and ground situation.
As the rain emergency continues, residents of Rawalpindi are reminded to prioritize their safety, follow instructions, and help others around them. With more rainfall expected, everyone must stay alert and prepared.
